Safe and Responsible Gambling

Gambling is an adult entertainment product with a built-in cost. It is not an income, an investment, or a way out of financial trouble. This page sets out the age rules, the warnings that matter, the limits and controls available to you on any licensed Australian wagering account, and every free support service in the country — including what to do if someone else's gambling is affecting you.

Strictly 18 years and over

You must be 18 or older to gamble anywhere in Australia, and 18 or older to use this website. It is an offence for an operator to allow a minor to gamble, which is why every licensed Australian operator must verify your identity before your account can be used.

  • Never let anyone under 18 use your betting account, device or login.
  • Use device-level parental controls and app store age restrictions on shared phones and tablets.
  • Be alert to gambling-style mechanics in games your children play — loot boxes, in-game currencies and simulated pokies normalise the mechanics well before any money is at stake.
  • If you are under 18 and gambling, or worried about it, call Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 — free and confidential, 24/7.

Ground rules for safer gambling

None of these will make gambling profitable. They are the difference between an expensive hobby and a damaging one.

Set a loss limit before you start

Decide the amount you are prepared to lose entirely, before you open the app. Money for rent, bills, food, loan repayments, school fees or anyone else is never that amount.

Treat it as paid entertainment

Budget for it the way you budget for a concert ticket: the money is spent when you hand it over. Any return is a bonus, never the plan.

Set a deposit limit on day one

Not after a bad week. Set it when you open the account, while you are calm and the number is still abstract.

Never chase losses

Raising your stake to win back a loss is the single most common route into serious harm. A loss is a sunk cost; the next bet does not know it happened.

Use a clock, not a feeling

Set a time limit and an alarm. Sessions expand quietly, and nothing inside a gambling app is designed to end them.

Never gamble with borrowed money

No credit cards, loans, buy-now-pay-later, cash advances, or money belonging to anyone else. Credit cards are banned for online wagering in Australia for exactly this reason.

Stay sober and rested

Alcohol, other drugs, prescription medication and exhaustion all degrade judgement and inflate risk tolerance.

Do not gamble to cope

If you are betting because you are stressed, grieving, lonely, bored or depressed, gambling will deepen all four. Talk to someone instead.

Keep it visible

Read your activity statements. Secrecy is both a symptom of harm and an accelerator of it.

Take a withdrawal as final

If you withdraw, treat the money as gone from the account. Being able to cancel a withdrawal makes it easy to undo a good decision.

Warnings and the myths worth discarding

Read these before your next bet

  • Chances are you are about to lose. Every market carries a margin in the operator favour. Across time, the mathematics does not favour you.
  • Gambling is not a source of income. Anyone selling tips, systems or “guaranteed” methods is monetising you, not the bookmaker.
  • A win does not mean you are good at this. Short-run results are variance. Winning early is a well-documented risk factor, not a sign of skill.
  • Nothing is “due”. Races, matches, spins and hands are independent events. Streaks and patterns are how human beings read noise.
  • Knowledge helps far less than it feels like it does. Form study and sport expertise do not overcome a structural margin, and they make overconfidence more expensive.
  • Bonus bets are not free money. They carry conditions, and their function is to increase how much you stake and how often.
  • Near misses are designed. The second-place finish and the symbol just above the payline are built to feel like near-wins. They are losses.
  • Gambling harm is not a character flaw. These products are engineered to be engaging. Needing help is not weakness, and it is far more common than the silence around it suggests.

Warning signs that gambling has become a problem

Harm sits on a spectrum, and it rarely announces itself. If several of these apply to you, it is worth a conversation with a counsellor — free, confidential, no judgement.

Money

  • Betting more than you planned, or more than you can afford to lose
  • Borrowing, selling things or using bill money to gamble
  • Unpaid bills, rent or loan repayments while still betting
  • Chasing losses with bigger stakes
  • Not knowing, or not wanting to know, how much you are down

Behaviour

  • Hiding or lying about how much you bet
  • Gambling longer or more often than intended
  • Betting alone, late at night, or at work
  • Needing larger stakes for the same excitement
  • Failed attempts to cut back or stop

Mood

  • Irritability, restlessness or anxiety when you cannot bet
  • Guilt, shame or self-loathing after betting
  • Gambling to escape stress, loneliness, grief or low mood
  • Relief rather than enjoyment when you place a bet
  • Thinking about betting most of the day

Life

  • Arguments about money or gambling with family or partners
  • Missing work, study, sleep, meals or family commitments
  • Withdrawing from friends, hobbies and sport
  • Declining performance at work or school
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide — call 13 11 14 now

Limits, cooling-off and account controls

Every licensed Australian wagering operator must offer binding limits. On the LightningBet platform the mechanics are as follows, and the same pattern applies across the licensed market:

Account controls on a licensed Australian wagering account
ControlHow it worksWhy it helps
Deposit limitSet a maximum deposit per day, week or month. The platform blocks deposits above it.Caps your maximum possible loss over a period, regardless of how you feel in the moment.
Lowering a limitApplies immediately. You can always tighten your own limit instantly, with no waiting.
Raising a limitTakes effect only after a cooling-off period.Deliberate friction, so that an increase cannot be made on impulse mid-session.
Minimum transactionsA$5 deposit and withdrawal, A$1 minimum bet.Low minimums let you withdraw small balances instead of re-staking them.
Activity statementsA record of deposits, bets, wins and losses.Replaces a vague sense of how you are going with an actual number.
No creditCredit cards and credit-linked payments are prohibited by law.You cannot gamble with borrowed money through a licensed operator.

The single most useful thing you can do today

Open your account settings and set a deposit limit at an amount you could lose without it changing anything in your life. Then leave it alone. Review it downward whenever you like; treat any wish to raise it as information about yourself rather than an administrative obstacle.

Taking a break

A break locks your account for a fixed period. It cannot be reversed early, which is the entire point — the decision is made by the version of you that wanted the break.

  • Short break: 1, 7 or 30 days. Useful for interrupting a pattern, a bad run or a stressful period.
  • Long break: 3, 6 or 12 months. Appropriate when gambling has started affecting money, mood or relationships.
  • Deactivation: close the account down while keeping your records.
  • Permanent self-exclusion: a final closure with that operator, designed not to be lifted on request.

On LightningBet these sit under Account → Responsible Gambling. Every licensed Australian operator provides equivalents, and staff are trained to action the request without argument. If an operator makes it difficult, that is a complaint for the state regulator.

BetStop — the National Self-Exclusion Register

BetStop is a free Australian Government register. One registration excludes you from every licensed Australian online and telephone wagering operator — including operators you have never used and any that launch while you are registered.

  • Register: betstop.gov.au or call 1800 238 786
  • Choose a period from three months up to a lifetime
  • It cannot be lifted early, and a cooling-off period applies at the end before access returns
  • Marketing must stop — registered operators may not advertise to you
  • You may nominate a support person to be told you have registered
  • It does not cover offshore sites, since they are not licensed in Australia — combine it with the blocking tools below

Blocking tools, bank controls and practical friction

  • Bank gambling blocks. Most major Australian banks can block gambling transactions on your debit card from the app, often with a delay before the block can be removed. Ask your bank, or check your app settings.
  • Delete the apps, and remove saved cards, PayID shortcuts and stored logins. Convenience is the mechanism.
  • Block gambling websites at device or router level, and in your browser.
  • Unsubscribe from all wagering marketing, emails, SMS and push notifications.
  • Hand financial control to someone you trust, at least temporarily. A free financial counsellor can help structure this.
  • Remove the triggers: mute betting-related social accounts, group chats, tipping services and odds notifications.

If it is someone else's gambling

Gambling harm reaches partners, children, parents, siblings and friends — through money, secrecy, broken promises and lost time. You are entitled to support in your own right, whether or not the person gambling wants help.

  • Gambling Help Online supports family members too — 1800 858 858, free and confidential, 24/7.
  • Protect yourself financially first: separate accounts where you can, review joint liabilities and credit access, and get free advice from the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.
  • Do not cover the debts without advice. Paying off a gambling debt commonly enables the next one.
  • Be specific rather than accusatory: name the behaviour and its effect on you, not the person's character.
  • You cannot force someone to stop. You can state clear boundaries, keep them, and look after yourself and any children involved.
  • If there is family violence or you feel unsafe, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732, or 000 in an emergency.
